Although Malayalam actor Parvathy Thiruvothu made her Tamil debut with the 2009 romantic drama Poo and also played a notable role in the thriller Chennaiyil Oru Naal (2013), it was director Bharat Bala’s survival drama Maryan (2013) that earned her recognition in the industry. Boasting a crew featuring some of the biggest names in Indian cinema, including Oscar winners AR Rahman and Resul Pookutty, Parvathy played the female lead opposite Dhanush in the movie.
However, the actor recently revealed that working on Maryan was far from easy, at least initially, as the makers kept pushing her to continue shooting without considering the troubles she was facing. “The first day of the shoot was me getting completely drenched in water and being romanced by the hero (Dhanush). They kept pouring water on me, and I realised I hadn’t carried any change (of clothes). I didn’t have an entourage of people taking care of me or anything,” she recalled during a conversation with Hauterrfly.
Mentioning that the film’s team continued filming without pausing to check whether she was fine, Parvathy revealed that it was only after she loudly told them she was on her period that they allowed her to go change. The actor said, “At one point, I had to go and tell him (the director) that ‘listen, I need to go back to the hotel, change and come.’ But they were like, ‘No, no, we don’t have time.’ Then I had to loudly tell them that I am on my period and I have to. And they had no idea how to respond to that.” Noting that there were only three women on set at the time, including herself, Parvathy added, “Even now, most of the Malayalam films have very few women on set.”
Known for her performances in movies like Bangalore Days, Ennu Ninte Moideen, Charlie, Take Off, Uyare, Virus, and Puzhu, Parvathy is currently working on two movies: I, Nobody and Pradhama Dhrishtya Kuttakkar.
