There is a generation that grew up listening to the song “Sandese Aate Hai” from J.P. Dutt’s 1997 classic Border. Sung by Sonu Nigam and Roop Kumar Rathod, the song became a defining moment in popular culture and is widely regarded as the track that firmly put Sonu on the musical map. Now, with Border 2, led by Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty, set to hit theatres later this month on January 23, the makers have unveiled a 2.0 version of the iconic song, titled “Ghar Kab Aaoge”, today at an event organized at Longewala, Jaisalmer, in the presence of BSF jawans.

While the original has been etched into memory thanks to the vocals of Sonu Nigam and Roop Kumar Rathod, the recreated version features new vocals by the trio of Arijit Singh, Vishal Mishra, and Diljit Dosanjh. Similarly, while the original music was composed by Anu Malik and the heartfelt lyrics were penned by Javed Akhtar, the updated version features new lyrics by Manoj Muntashir Shukla and music by Mithoon. The audio version of the song was dropped earlier today, and now a 3-minute 10-second video version has been released.
It starts with Varun Dhawan as an emotional soldier reading a letter from back home, before taking the opportunity to energize his unit, breaking into a dance joined by everyone. We also see Diljit Dosanjh doing the same, as he shakes a leg with his Air Force unit. However, Sunny Deol is presented in a more melancholic way, reading the letter with tears in his eyes. The video also shows shots of all four actors with their respective partners in the film: Sunny Deol with Mona Singh, Diljit Dosanjh with Sonam Bajwa, Varun Dhawan with Medha Rana, and Ahan Shetty with Anya Singh.

Border 2, directed by Anurag Singh and produced by JP Dutta along with Bhushan Kumar, found itself at the centre of controversy last year. The issue arose after Diljit Dosanjh’s Sardaar Ji 3, which also stars Pakistani actor Hania Aamir, was released outside India, despite Indian cine bodies issuing a blanket ban on Pakistani artistes working in Indian films following the Pahalgam terror attack. At the time, speculation was rife that Diljit might be recast in Border 2. Addressing the issue, producer and T-Series head Bhushan Kumar assured that Diljit was very much a part of the film, but also stated that he would not work with the singer-actor again after this project.
